Dual Boot Windows XP and Windows Vista (The Ultimate Guide)

So you used a brand new Hard Disk to make your Windows Vista installation , and you decided to unplug your Windows XP Hard Disk eh? Now , you can boot to both OSes using the boot order in BIOS but you have no clue how to make the system dual-boot using the new BCDedit tool that replaced the boot.ini we all know and love!

Fear not. Azrael is here! The definite guide of how to make your computer dual boot in XP and Vista if you didn't do it during VISTA installation.

1. 
   
   First of all you need to make sure that your WinXP HD boots first from your computers BIOS and NOT the WinVista HD.
2. 
   
   Boot into Windows XP as usual
3. 
   
   Copy from the Windows Vista HD root to the Windows XP HD root , the "Boot" folder and the "bootmgr" file.
4. 
   
   Confirm that you now have in your Windows XP HD root directory (probably C:\) these files and folders : Boot , bootmgr , boot.ini , ntldr, ntdetect.com (btw the last 3 are the windows xp neccessary boot files)
5. 
   
   Download the Vista Boot Pro Tool (download)
6. 
   
   Install it on your Windows XP session
7. 
   
   Go to the "Bootloader" TAB. Select “Reinstall the Vista bootloader” and press apply.
8. 
   
   As you would see , the program already found the Vista Installation. Let's now add manually the Windows XP installation.
9. 
   
   Go to "Manage OS Entry" TAB. Select "Add new operating system entry" select "Legacy OS" (this is important!) and name it "Windows XP"

Έτσι λοιπόν εεε? Στήσατε τα Vista σε καινούργιο δίσκο και κατα την διάρκεια της εγκατάστασης αποσυνδέσατε τον παλιό δίσκο με τα XP ? ΟΚ μπουτάρετε και στα δύο λειτουργικά από το BIOS αλλά τώρα θέλετε να κάνετε το σύστημα σας dual boot (με οθόνη επιλογής) και δεν ξέρετε από που να ξεκινήσετε?

Χμμ ....και πάλι βαριέμαι να το μεταφράζω... Στείλτε ένα μυνηματάκι , ωρε Έλληνες , αν ενδιαφέρεσθε.

Repairing a damaged Windows XP installation

As you can remember from my older posts i installed Windows Vista on my PC due to a damaged windows installation. I finally managed to recover my original Windows XP installation as well . So i wrote a FAQ for anyone interested:

THE DEFINITE AZRAEL GUIDE
FOR RECOVERING A WINDOWS XP INSTALLATION
(e.g. AFTER A MOBO REPLACEMENT)

So , you replaced your Motherboard with a different one , but you decided to continue using your original Windows XP already installed on your Hard Disk and not re-install. But now, alas, you are experiencing one or more of the following problems??

• Your PC restarts unexpectectedly during the Windows logo screen?


• You get the following messenge when trying to logon
  "A problem has prevented Windows from accurately checking the status of the license for this computer. To proceed your copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft. Do you want to continue?" but when you select yes , the system logs you , putting you to an infinite loop?
  
• You tried to do a windows repair but the Windows repair hangs at "34 minutes remaining" or at "33 minutes remaining"?


• A window pops-up during repair asking about "viaagp1.sys"?


• You successfully did a repair (wow!) but now the default windows installation is now on drive F:\ instead of C:\?
  
  Finally , there ARE solutions to all of the above problems and here is how! Follow ALL THE STEPS CAREFULLY
  

1. 
   
   First of all , if you have a VIA motherboard , you MUST write the viaagp1.sys file to a floppy disk. You can find it on the VIA HYPERION DRIVERS installation package in the VIA website. Just download the hyperion executable , unzip it somewhere , find the .sys file and write it to a floppy.
   
2. 
   
   Now you must do a windows repair, using your original windows xp cd . By this I DO NOT MEAN "Recovery Consoly Repair". I Mean the WINDOWS REPAIR . Here is how: Read this for more.
   
3. 
   When the installation will hang and freeze at 34 minutes (and believe me, the installation WILL hang!!!) press the reset button on your PC and then immidiately press F8 in order to bring up the Safe Mode menu options
   Then choose DEBUGGING MODE . It is very very important to continue the repair in DUBUGING MODE . Do not skip this part!
4. 
   So, the repair mode will now resume , but in Debugging mode . When the repair reaches again the 34 minutes a window will pop-up asking you for the viaagp1.sys file. Load it from the floppy you made in step (1)
   
5. 
   The repair continues . Because of the "debugging nature" of the repair , a few windows will pop-up as well informing you for other possible missing files (drivers mostly). Them you can ignore. You will deal with them later. But You must NOT ignore the viaagp1.sys file I mentioned before , in step (4)
   
6. 
   The installation will complete successfully and you will prompted to log on and activate your installation. Now you CAN activate (without problems ) , via telephone your installation. Do it!
   
7. 
   
   After the telephone activation , when you log in , you may find that your windows installation is now on drive F:\ or G:\ or sth instead of C:\ . If this happens fear not! You must do this
   
8. 
   
   If you had to do step (7 ) , after the restart you will find that you , once again , cannot logon to your system because "A problem has prevented Windows from accurately checking the status of the license for this computer.. blah...blah". Unfortunately you MUST do for one final time the steps 2-5. ( You will probably not need to do a telephone activation again)
   
9. 
   
   Your system is now OK again!! You can check if the installer-repairer missed anything (usually USB HUB DRIVERS) from your new MOBO using the Device Manager , and install it manually (using the Windows XP CD first and the MOBO installation CD second)
   
10. 
    
    Install SP2 and all the latest patches.Your repair is now complete! Enjoy your trusty old installation on your new motherboard!

Vista Solutions (2)

Q."My HP Laserjet 1010 (or 1012 , 1015) printer doesn't work under Windows Vista. When I try to install it manually with "Add a Local Printer" but Vista says that you cannot setup manual USB printers!"

A. Well, first of all DO NOT use your old XP drivers. They do not work. period.

Until HP releases official drivers somewhere in February there is a workaround.

Go to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Printer-> Add a Local Printer

Then Select "Use an existing port" and select DOT4_001

Finally, Select the Microsoft Driver for HP Laserjet 1015 and finish. The printer will work ok.


You will get occasionaly the message (in your printouts!)
"Unsupported personality: PCL" but you can remedy this by powering off and on again your printer when this happens.

Q."My favorite media player (e.g. Zoom Player , BS Player ) operates with problem (s) under windows vista. I get the error message THE COLOR SCHEME HAS CHANGED TO WINDOWS VISTA BASIC"

ANS. The new prefferable method for video playback under windows vista is not longer the OVERLAY method that defaults in all the popular players, but the VMR9 method . For Zoom Player the Vista compatible settings can be changed with sth like : Options ->Advanced ->Filter Control-> Standard Media Playback->VMR9-> Manual Save

ΑΠ. Τα Windows Vista προτιμούν ο τρόπος με τον οποίο γίνεται το Video playback να μην είναι με την μέθοδο overlay που υποστήριζαν μέχρι σήμερα οι προηγούμενες εκδόσεις των Windows. Η νέα μέθοδος θα πρέπει να είναι η VMR9. Για το Zoom Player επιλέξτε

Options ->Advanced ->Filter Control-> Standard Media Playback->VMR9-> Manual Save

Πονάνε τα παλληκάρια μωρέ Vista? (εισαγωγή)

Ένα από τα πλεονεκτήματα του να δουλεύεις σε εταιρεία με Microsoft Enterprise Agreement είναι ότι μπορείς να έχεις στα χέρια σου τα προϊόντα της μαμας MS πολλούς μήνες πριν βγουν στην κυκλοφορία.

Εδώ και δυο μήνες λοιπόν , τα κομάντα μου στην δουλειά στηνουν και ξεστήνουν Windows Vista και μετά γυρίζουν από την μάχη γεμάτοι ιστορίες , λαβωματιές και νοσταλγία για τα λατρευτά τους Windows XP.

Τους έλεγα γκρινιάριδες , υπερβολικούς και πολέμιους της προόδου.

Πριν από μια εβδομάδα και κάτω από ανατριχιαστικές και φρικαλέες συνθήκες που προτιμώ (μπρρρ!!) να μην σας επαναλάβω , η Motherboard μου στο πισάκι στο σπίτι παρέδωσε πνεύμα.

Ευτυχώς είχα μια ακόμα motherboard , με παρόμοιο chipset στην καβάτζα. Όμως , ευγενικέ μου αναγνώστη το τέλος δεν ήταν αίσιο! Απεγνωσμένες προσπάθειες να επανάφέρω την εγκατάσταση με windows repair κατέληξαν στο διαβόητο από ότι διάβασα "Windows 34 minutes installation hang problem".

Θα έστηνα που θα έστηνα λειτουργικό από το μηδέν , είπα λοιπόν να γίνω και εγώ παλληκάρι και να στήσω Windows Vista. (αλλά και Office 2007 με την ευκαιρία)

Τα νέα προιόντα είναι όντως καταπληκτικά και αξίζουν 110%.

Τα καλά τα γράψαν άλλοι και θα γράψουν και άλλα τωρα που σε 20 μέρες θα βγουν και για το ευρύ κοινό.

Εγώ θα γράψω εδώ , όχι κακά , αλλά τις ιδιοτροπίες του νέου λειτουργικού. Τις παιδικές ασθένειες ας πούμε

Και επειδή η διεθνής εμπειρία είναι ακόμα ελάχιστη , ξεκινάω από το επόμενο post , με την μορφή FAQ και μάλιστα δίγλωσσα (English/Greek).

Αστικοί Μύθοι

Τα τελευταία χρόνια , βλέπω με ικανοποίηση τον κόσμο να στολίζει χριστουγεννιάτικα δέντρα. Έτσι χωρίς πρόβλημα.

Βλέπετε , όταν ήμουν μικρός ήταν της μόδας η εξής βλακώδης άποψη :

- "Μην στολίζετε Δέντρα. Είναι ξενόφερτο έθιμο. Να στολίζετε ένα καραβάκι!"

Ήθελα να σφίξω το λαρύγγι αυτού που σκαρφίστηκε την μπαρούδα με το καραβάκι :

- "Ρε ηλίθιε" ήθελα να του πω . "Στο χωριό μου , πάνω στην Πίνδο, δεν έχουν δει ποτέ στην ζωή τους καράβι , ούτε και θάλασσα! Πάππου προς πάππο δέντρο στολίζανε. Όχι Έλατο, είναι η αλήθεια - Φλαμούρι. Πάντως ΔΕΝΤΡΟ ΣΤΟΛΙΖΑΜΕ. Κανείς δεν γουστάρει το παλιοκαράβι σας!"

Ευτυχώς όμως , πλέον όλοι στολίζουν Δέντρα. Φαίνεται πως κάποιος τον στραγγάλισε τον ηλίθιο με τα καραβάκια.

Τώρα οι σκοτεινόψυχοι έχουν άλλο κόλλημα!!

Τους φταίει που τα Χριστούγεννα, οι περισσότεροι στην πόλη , στολίζουν τα μπαλκόνια τους με λαμπάκια , φωτάκια , καμπανούλες και χίλια δυό άλλα χαριτωμένα τσουμπλεκάκια.

Τους φαίνεται kitch!!

Προτιμάνε μάλλον την μαυρίλα των μπαλκονιών των προηγούμενων δεκαετιών. Άλλο ένα ενοχικό σύνδρομο που γεννήθηκε στην έμπυο κεφάλα κάποιου ολιγοσυναπτικού διανοητάκου.

Το βάζω και αυτό μαζί με τα άλλα βλακώδη ενοχικά σύνδρομα που μας κατατρέχουν όπως :

• Την χωριάτικη σαλάτα που ΠΡΕΠΕΙ να έχει Φέτα πράγμα καταγέλαστο διότι το τυρί αυτό είναι πραγματικά ντόπιο σε έλάχιστες ελληνικές περιοχές.


• Το Ελληνικό Φαγητό ΠΡΕΠΕΙ να έχει ελαιόλαδο πράγμα καταγέλαστοι διότι το 50% της ελληνικής επικράτειας μαγείρευε ιστορικά πάντα με ζωικό λίπος. ΝΑΙ το λάδι είναι υγειινό αλλά ΟΧΙ το λάδι ΔΕΝ είναι ντε και καλά προϋπόθεση ελληνικότητας.
  
• Τό ότι ο Αστικός Τρόπος ζωής είναι ΚΑΚΟΣ και μακάρι να μέναμε όλοι στα χωριά των παπούδων μας... Το πόσο κακό έκανε στην Ελλάδα αυτός ο μύθος της αστυφιλίας και το πόσο μεγάλη τροχοπέδη έγινε για την ανάπτυξη του τόπου , είναι ένα μεγάλο θέμα που ελπίζω να αναπτύξω σε επόμενο ποστ με Αστικούς Μύθους.
